Give a man some vegetables, feed him for a day. Teach him how to grow some vegetables, feed him for life!  At Free Haven Farms, education is a fundamental aspect of our focus. Having years of experience working with children and adults, we have found successful ways to inspire and empower individuals to connect with nature, grow their own food, and improve their quality of life.

Ras Micaiah is the Founder of Free Haven Farms.  He developed a love for farming at the young age of 9 and continued his involvement in agriculture throughout his youth. He became certified as a plumber and was employed in the field for many years but returned back to his roots in agriculture. Micaiah was employed at Mill Creek Farm in West Philadelphia for over 4 seasons as the Farmer/Co-Director.  While he was there, he managed weekly farmer’s markets and grew over 6,000 lbs of food annually on a ½ acre lot.  Since his involvement in urban agriculture for the past 10 years, he has implemented lessons and curricula to youth in schools and after-school programs.

Dr. Cynthia Hall is the Soil Scientist at Free Haven Farms. She is currently an Associate Professor of Geosciences at West Chester University in West Chester, PA. Her research focuses on contaminants found in soil, such as lead and arsenic, which have negative impacts on human health and ecosystems. As a Ph.D. student at Georgia Tech, she studied the nitrogen cycle in an effort to understand nutrient deficiencies in certain soils and sediments. Dr. Hall brings over 15 years of experience in soil science to Free Haven Farms to assist with producing the highest quality soil, high in nutrients and no contamination, as well as the educational programs offered at the farm.

Black Birth Keepers Link Up!

The People's Midwife Alliance is pleased to host our first Black Birth Keepers Link Up potluck at The Inner Circle.  We are inviting Philadelphia's local doulas, midwives, childbirth educators, and lactation consultants to come together, network, and share resources that will help enrich the services that we provide to our sisters.  Some of the topics we want to discuss are continuing education options,  back up support, and future collaborations.

This is an intimate setting so we ask that you RSVP... and bring a healthy dish to share!
